What comes into your mind when you hear the word retire? Is it about growing old? Is it a time when you no longer need to work and simply just enjoy life? Is it a time to travel the world, spend time with your family and friends, or simply stay at home and sleep for the whole day?
A common belief about retirement is that it is the time when people can finally stop working and pursue forgotten hobbies and interests? It is the time to travel, spend time with loved ones, stay at home, and finally start enjoying life?
I used to have this belief about retirement when I was younger. I guess watching too much T.V and movies unconsciously instilled in me this belief as the common end scenario among stories is usually a “happily ever after”. However, upon venturing into entrepreneurship and learning about personal finance, I realized that being truly retired is so much different from what I used to believe.
Huh? What do you mean Jeyps? So you’re saying that is not really retirement? Then what is it?
Well, Right now, I believe retirement is not the time when you finally quit your job and finally enjoy life. It is, however, the time when you don’t need to work anymore, but you still choose to do so because it gives you purpose and self-fulfillment.
Just think about Bill Gates who still works as a technology advisor for Microsoft despite being labeled the richest man in the world. Mark Zuckerberg, who just once dreamed of simply having an online yearbook during his college years but now has an estimated total net worth of $35.1 billion as of March 2015, still works as chairman and chief executive of Facebook.
Have you ever wondered why these kinds of people still work despite all the wealth and riches that they have? Why don’t they just quit their jobs, and enjoy life? It’s because they don’t limit themselves to the definition of retirement that most people believe.
Regardless of all the money that they have, they still continue to work and focus on doing the things that can give them a sense of fulfillment. These people continue to live their legacy.
“Retirement may be an ending, a closing; but it is also a new beginning.”
