Have you ever felt so overwhelmed in life that you are no longer able to function and do your normal activities properly? You start to worry about something even though it hasn’t happened yet. For the past few months, I guess I actually did. It just felt that everything in my life was going wrong. From the decisions that I made in the past, work related concerns, social relationships and even family matters, all seem to be falling apart in my life. I lost motivation. I just wanted to disappear.
So today, I decided to write this short article, not just to encourage you guys but mainly to remind and encourage myself to keep moving on and looking forward for what is instore in the future.
How exactly do you stay strong when everything in your life just seem to be falling apart? Well, I don’t have a solid solution for that (as I’ve mentioned, I’m actually experiencing a lot of things currently as well) but I guess, I now just try to remember 5 things.
- 1) Fully acknowledge the reality of what is happening.
I’ll put this as number 1, because I think this is crucial. You need to learn how to accept the reality of life. You need to realize that life is never easy and that you cannot find peace and happiness by avoiding the challenges that life has to offer. A lot of changes can happen in just an instant; so instead of avoiding these, instead of locking yourself alone in your own bedroom and overthinking about things that are yet to happen (this was actually what I was doing for the past weeks), start acknowledging the truth. Start moving on. Start facing life’s challenges. Either it will give you what you want or it will teach you what the next right move is.
I believe we all know that life is too short to spend worrying about the future. Life is too short to spend on blaming yourself for making wrong decisions in the past. Yes, you may be disappointed about what your current situation is right now. But just remember, these disappointments are simply just the results of our misplaced expectations. Letting go of these needless expectations may actually be your first step to triumph.
- 2) Encourage yourself to take one action, then another, and another, no matter what.
Honestly speaking, I found taking action hard to do when I lost motivation. However, as I listened to this video, I came to realize that I just need to start over again and take action, one step at a time.
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” I believe this famous quote from Martin Luther King Jr already summarizes everything for this second point.
Always remember, the most successful individuals are the ones who struggled and experienced the most failures in life. Every mistake, heartbreak and loss contains its own solution, its own subtle lesson on how to improve your performance and outcome next time.
It’s all about courage. It’s about being scared to death and then taking the next necessary step anyway. In the end, good things don’t come to those who wait; good things come to those who are patient, to those who work hard through good times and bad, to those who constantly try to achieve what they want most in life.
- 3) Always remember that everything in life is not permanent
“The only constant thing in life is change itself.” This is one common cliché that I often hear from people. And yes! It is indeed very true. Nothing is permanent in life, everything changes, even your struggles and heartaches.
Come to think of it, today may be a rainy day, but just wait for tomorrow and you’ll just realize that the sun is up and shining brightly. You may get hurt today, but as days pass by, you’ll eventually heal. Where there is darkness, there is always light. You may be full of negativity today, but instead, choose to believe that everything will come out positive at the right time. Nothing last forever, even your failures.
So if things are good right now, enjoy it. It won’t last forever. If things are bad, don’t worry because it won’t last forever either. Just because life isn’t easy at the moment, doesn’t mean you can’t laugh. Just because something is bothering you, doesn’t mean you can’t smile. Every moment gives you a new beginning and a new ending. You get a second chance, every second. You just have to take it and make the best of it.
- 4) Look for something positive in everything that occurs in your life.
Have you ever watched the movie “Silver Linings Playbook”? If not, I suggest you watch it. It’s an American romantic comedy drama film shown in theatres back in 2012. One thing that I won’t forget in this movie is the main protagonist’s outlook in life. He always looks for his “silver lining” in every situation of his life.
What’s a silver lining you say? Well, it’s when “you emphasize the hopeful side of a situation that might seem gloomy on the surface.” The common expression “every cloud has a silver lining” means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect.
You may be in your worst situation right now. You may not have what you want, you may be very hurt, or far from where you wish to be, but you still have more than enough to appreciate right now. Be thankful that you are still alive. Be thankful that you can still think properly. You can still breath, see with your eyes, hear with your ears, smell with your nose and even walk with your feet.
Think about it; what if you wake up tomorrow and you loose one these things? Won’t it be a lot worse that what you currently are experiencing right now? Just think of all the beauty that still remains around you, notice it and smile.
At the end of the day, it’s not happiness that makes us thankful, but it’s thankfulness that makes us happy. Showing appreciation for the good things that you have is the most powerful happiness boosting activity there is.
- 5) Always remember His promise. – Jeremiah 29:11
This could be optional for you but as a believer of Christ and the Bible, I believe and just feel that I just need to hold on a bit longer and not give up on life because He made His promise.
Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Yes, we may have a lot of challenges right now. It might be a rough journey. But I know in the end, He gave His promise and that is what is to happen to each and every one of us.
“Life is never easy. Whether you are rich or poor, good looking or ugly, tall or short, intelligent or a slow learner, you will surely experience difficulties and challenges in life. You simply have to decide on how you will face these things. It’s up to you on how you can stay strong when everything just seem to go wrong.”
I hope this article taught you something about how to achieve success.
